Biohit Oyj environmental objectives

Responsibility

Biohit focuses on the following measures in its environmental objectives:

  • Maximizing waste recovery
  • Minimization of waste from production
  • Reducing the environmental effect of packaging materials
  • Reducing paper consumption

Environmental objectives are an important part of Biohit’s strategy. New aspects of more environmentally friendly activities are being sought all the time.

Between 2017 and 2022 the objectives set have been achieved well and, in some cases, even exceeded.

Recoverable and hazardous waste

Our aim is that at least 94% of the total amount of waste would be recoverable. To achieve this goal, we are reducing the use of hazardous chemicals by replacing them with more safe alternatives.

The ratio of recoverable waste to the total amount of waste has been quite stable between 2017 and 2022 (Figure 1). Although the aim 94% has not always been reached, the average of the ratio (92%) is near the aim.  Between 2018 and 2020 the ratio was increasing but dropped clearly under 94% in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Nonetheless, between 2021 and 2022 the ratio has been increasing and was in 2022 clearly over the aim 94%. Furthermore, in 2022 over half of our waste was recycled.

Waste from production

Our aim is to minimize the amount of waste from production. To achieve this goal, we are improving our inventory management.

Between 2018 and 2020 the ratio of scrapping costs in relation to turnover was significantly decreasing but peaked in 2021 due to coronavirus pandemic (Figure 2). Nonetheless, between 2021 and 2022 the rate has again been decreasing.

Environmental effect of packaging materials

Our aim is to reduce the amount of packaging-related waste. To achieve this goal, we are surveying for more ecological alternatives for packaging materials.

Use of paper

Our aim is to minimize use of paper. To achieve this goal, we are increasing the share of documentation in electronic format.

Between 2017 and 2022 the paper consumption in relation to turnover was halved although the coronavirus pandemic caused some increase in the ratio between 2020 and 2021 (Figure 3). Nonetheless, between 2021 and 2022 the paper consumption ratio has again been decreasing.
